3 Unique Spray Drying Solutions

Pioneering Nutrition through Innovation

At Envirostar, we believe in the power of innovation. At our lab, we solve problems and pioneer solutions for a wide variety of industries. Here’s a look at some of the ways our team is making an impact:

  • Powdered Vinegar

Vinegar has a long history in the food industry as a preservative and flavoring agent. Vinegar is an acidic liquid made through a two-step fermentation process and is most often consumed in its natural liquid form. When Bridgewell Agribusiness, a global leader in food and agriculture products, wanted to powderize their popular mango-habanero vinegar to market it to snack companies as a flavoring for things like chips, they approached Envirostar to help with formulation development. The challenge? The acidity of vinegar makes it hard to spray dry because it is corrosive to the equipment and difficult to breathe during processing.Envirostar developed a spray drying recipe that reduced intense odors, was easier on the equipment, and retained its powerful flavor profile. Envirostar’s solution not only provided Bridgewell with a marketable product, but it also significantly reduced shipping costs and opened the door for the company to explore additional product lines.

  • Stronger Magnets

A state university was working to develop a high-efficiency motor but their process for making magnet material usable was inefficient. The university needed to increase the energy density of its magnets to reduce the amount of power needed to run its motor, so they called on Envirostar for a solution.Envirostar developed a formula to spray dry the raw magnet material slurry and reduce the dynamic surface tension by adding a surface treatment to make it easier to atomize the liquid. Envirostar’s process created smaller particles resulting in a denser, more powerful magnet.

  • Mineral Characterization

Mineral identification and characterization can help scientists determine the geologic history of a region, the potential for developing economic resources, or the possibility of geologic hazards. Despite the numerous physical properties of minerals (color, luster, streak, and crystal form), some samples are difficult to classify with standard identification tools.By creating a process to spray dry clay samples, Envirostar helped Texas A&M University’s Oceanography Department characterize minerals from some of the oldest known rock outcrops in the world. The rock samples collected by the University are made of very small grains that fall flat when mounted for X-ray diffraction resulting in bad data. Working with Envirostar to spray dry the samples created a random orientation of the grains allowing the University to effectively perform their analysis and continue their research.

“We enjoy a challenge,” EnviroStar CEO Clint Buchner said. “Solving problems is really what makes us distinct. Our team’s real-world experience, formal education and creative thinking uniquely position us to solve a wide variety of problems – often developing solutions that seem elusive.”
